Ending

"The Swimmer" by John Cheever

In the last remaining parts of the story Neddy is portrayed as an Older man tooling down the middle of a highway. That isn't close to what he looked and sounded like in the beginning of the story.

(Page.6/ Par. 2)

Though still moving along with his journey he encounters other friends and people he knows as well. These encounters are rather strange. Neddy seems to not remember anything brung up in the conversations by these other people. Such as Helen telling Neddy about Eric's operation that had happened 3 years ago, that Neddy did not seem to remember.

(Page.8/ Last half of page of conversation with Helen.)

Neddy was cold, aching, sore, weak, frill and tired for once in his life, in this story. Very unlike how he was in the beginning.

(Page.11/ Par. 2)

At last. he approaches his own home, to only find it dark, empty and lifeless. The story ends with Neddy banging and yelling on the front door of what was once his home.

(Last page)

  • The loud boom of the thunder and the sudden change in weather was actually a sudden fast-forward in time. Many, many years have passed in in only a split second in the story. Neddy became old and senile with his whole life passed on, with many scenes and information in between that sudden time lapse missing.

Sudden strange Change in weather and story

- On Neddy's journey he runs into confrontation with Enid Bunker (A known friend of his) in which the exact time she speaks, sudden thunder is heard in the distance.

- Not too long after the meeting of Enid, he starts to continue on with his journey. Whilst jogging on his way to the Levy's house, he notices it is empty, no signs of life in that building, was abandoned.

Intro to Neddy Merrill

- - What we once thought was a nice summer day during July suddenly happens to change. A storm had started up and it was raining, pouring. The leaves on the trees seemed to have started falling and changing color. He passes Lindley's Riding Ring to only find he stables completely empty of their horses. As he passed Lindley's Riding Ring, he approached the Welcher's house, to only find their pool to be empty and dry. Twas suddenly, and apparently Autumn.

(Page.5 / Par.1)

Neddy's house with his wife and 4 children was only eight miles away to the south in a town that goes by the name of Bullet Park.

(Page 1, Par. 2, Lines 14, 15, 16)

Neddy then spots a linage of pools, almost like a river in the shape of a dogleg (which he names after his wife, Lucinda.)

Being his home was only eight miles away, he decides to pool hop his

way home.
