Protest

From May to June, 1919 the race riots erupted in cities all across the United States. As a response to the riots NAACP leader James Weldon Johnson planned peaceful protests.

The Great Depression

Many hated them

The Great Depression was an economic slump

that lasted from 1929 to 1939. This affected the

NAACP because they lost a lot of funding from millionaires who lost all their money. This caused them to not be able to do as many things as they would have liked to.

At this time many people still believed that blacks and whites should be segregated. As you could assume that caused those people to be very angry when they heard about a group push to demolish what they were pushing for.

and Mary White Ovington. The
