Fidel Castro was a leading proponent for communism and a revolutionary in Cuba. He became president of the newly communist nation on June 1st, 1961. His support in communism is considered a quite notable case as, contrary to most communist leaders, Castro was born into a fair wealth and pursued a rigorous education. Although Castro announced to be apart of the communist party in 1961 upon his elections, he proclaimed to have more socialist nature in his political views and choices. The president is considered to be highly controversial due to his involvement in the Cold War, specifically, the Cuban Missile Crisis. When the U.S. obtained evidence of Cuban nuclear weapons, Castro held firm that the missiles were for defensive purposes only. This action drastically increased the paranoia that the U.S. Government possessed regarding the recent Cuban alliance with Russia. Additionally, Castro wanted to threaten the U.S. with a nuclear strike should they not end the embargo and withdraw ships from Cuban waters. At the dinner party, Castro is sitting next to Ho Chi Minh because of their similar involvement with the communist party. They both were leaders of small communist countries that managed to have a wide political impact on the Cold War.
