Finnish Food

On one hand, Finnish food reflects Scandinavian influences that have come from our neighbor, Sweden. On the other hand, the cuisine is shaped by the traditions of our Eastern neighbor, Russia. Overall, Finland’s Nordic location, with its cold snowy winters, pure soil, and long and light summer days, gives the Finnish cuisine its special, fresh taste. As Finland is a country of thousands of lakes and forests, fish, game and berries are characteristic of our food culture.

Jamaican Food

Jamaica has a rich history in the food that they have today. In the founding of Jamaica, the Spanish brought their culture. They had many slaves that came to the island, so each of them had their own recipes from their original families in Africa. They had many spices. The country later got taken over by the English, and they turned much of the island into sugar plantains. Once slave trade was banned, Indians came over and then turned it all into spices and "Jerk," which is a famous Jamaican spice. Jamaica today is known for all of their spices.

American Food

FOOD

Food from the United States varies in many different ways, unlike many other countries. Some countries may have one specific historical background for their food, but the United States has many. The United States food is a combination between many different cultures and religions. This includes historical background from England, Spain, Mexico, Italy, and many more. All of these countries have made their mark on the United States to make the food what it is today.

Comparing/Contrasting

The Flags

Finland Flag

Comparing/Contrasting

The Flags

The Finnish flag became what it is today when they became independent in 1917. On the flag there is a cross which represents Christianity, and the two colors are blue and white. The blue on the flag represents all of the hundreds of lakes and the sky in Finland, while the white represents the 5-7 months where snow covers the ground.

Jamaica's Flag

Comparing/Contrasting

The Flags

After gaining independence from the British West Indies in 1962, Jamaica held a national competition to find the design for their new national flag. Of many designs submitted, the gold saltire, or X, was chosen. On the flag, the green symbolizes hope, agricultural richness, and vegetation. Black has represented hardships as well as strength for overcoming those hardships, and gold is for the sun shining on Jamaica.

United States Flag

Comparing/Contrasting the Flags

The United States flag is very interesting. On the flag, the 50 stars represent the 50 states of America. The 13 stripes on the flag represent the original 13 colonies. The red, white, and blue on the flag represent different things. The red symbolizes hardiness and valor, the white stands for purity and innocence, and the blue means vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
