The main character's name is Santiago.
He is a shepherd of a flock of sheep,
which he takes around the south of Spain,
from town to town.
One night, this boy sleep in an
abandoned church, with a
sycamore tree growing inside it.
He journies down to a coastal town called
Tarifa to sell his sheep's wool. When he is there,
he talks with an old man about omens and
people's personal legends. He also talks to him about a dream that Santiago is having, and that it means that he will find treasure in Egypt, and that it is his personal legend. The old man claims to be the king of Salem. He gives the boy a Urim and Thimmim, which are used to read omens sent from the gods to guild him along.
The boy now makes it to Africa by boat, and lands in the town of
Tanger. Here, he meets another boy, but he steals all of Santiago's money. Santiago finds work at a crystal shop atop a hill. He works there for a year, and benifits the shop greatly. After he stops working there, he wants to go back to Spain, because now he can afford twice the number of sheep in his old flock, but yet, a part of him wants to continue on his quest to Egypt. In the end, he decides to go to Egypt.
To get to Egypt, Santiago joins a caravan that is going to an oasis called Faiyum. In the same caravan as him a man that wants to be an alchemist, and they talk and learn one from the other.
They arrive at the oasis Faiyum, which has about 50,000 palm trees and 300 wells. There are tribal wars going on, but the oasis is always suppose to be a neutral place. But, while Santiago is in the desert, he has a vision that the oasis will be attacked, so he tells the elders and save the people there.
Also, there is a well there, where he meets an African woman named Fatima, whom he falls in love with.
The boy meets the Althemist and together they travel through the desert, and the boy learns much from the alchemist, his heart, and he also learns much about the language of the world. nearing the end of their journey, they stop at a monastery, where the Alchemist turns lead into gold.

it is said that Santiago will find
his treasure.
Santiago's heart tells him that wear his tears fall next, there will his treasure be. When he sees the pyramids, he starts to cry, and where his tears fall, a scarab beetle appears, which is a good sign from the gods. He starts digging, soon, he is found by robbers, who rob him of his gold. Before leaving, one tell hims of a dream he had, about how he would find treasure by diggging under a sycomore tree in an ruined church in the plains of Spain. (hmm, sounds familiar...) Overcome with joy, the boy returns to Spain to claim his treasure.
