Ferdinand Magellan

Death and Birth

Ferdinand Magellan was born in 1480. His date of death was April 27, 1521 so he lived to be 41 years old. He was born in Portugal so he grew up

speaking Portuguese.

During the Exploration

Magellan and his crew set sail on November

20th. They crossed the equator on Nov. 27th

and sighted South America on December 6th

Magellan and his crew anchored near present

day Rio de Janiero, but bad conditions caused

Magellan to delay. For overwintering, Magellan established a temporary settlement called Puerto San Julian.

Ships and Crew

Magellan sailed for Spain. On his crew he had 270 people from many nations including Portuguese, Spanish, Italians, Germans, Flemish, Greeks, English, and French. Magellan sailed on 5 ships. Those ships were the Trinidad, the San Antonio, the Concepcion, the Victoria and the Santiago.

Before Departure

The Return

Magellan and the remains of his crew sailed home on three ships, for the Concepcion was abandoned and burned.

The Santiago was sent down a coast on a scouting expedition and the ship was wrecked in a sudden storm. Magellan's crew survived and made it safely to shore. Two crew members returned to Magellan to inform him of what happened
