MEDIA STUDIES

What is Media Studies?

The study and analysis of messages,

attitudes and beliefs of the media.

  • TV
  • Film
  • Music
  • Radio
  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Video Games
  • The Internet

and all the advertising that goes

with all of these...

And when we're surrounded by media messages.

it's important not to be sucked in.

We study texts and analyse the meaning behind the sounds and visuals. We discuss the ideologies, values and messages intended by the producers and how audiences may interpret them.

You will be creating either a cross media package for a new artist or band, the opening of a new tv drama or a new magazine. You will also be designing the accompanying website.

(the best A level subject by far :)

We have been nominated for several annual BFI awards. This is a national production competition. Here's one that not only got nominated for the Media Magazine awards at the British Film Institute (BFI) but actually won a prize for inspirational production work.

And this year, this student won the award for best cinematography (parental guidance advised)

Media is for people who don't like to take things at

face value. People who like to question.

You will be working on exam units and a practical production worth 30% of your final A level. All your work will be uploaded onto a blog like this one www.gbhsmediastudies.blogspot.com

and this one ...

You will be filming, marketing, editing throughout and analysing all aspects of media including film, tv and music videos. You will demonstrate your skills of analysis, research, planning, production and evaluation of media texts, individually and in groups with half termly projects.

Section A of the exam asks students to look at how camera, mise en scene, editing and sound work together to create a particular representation.

Watch this clip and tell me how ethnicity is represented:

Media is for people who don't like to take things at face value. People who like to question. It gives you the skills to be able to think for yourself

and make your own decisions on which media messages to accept and which to ignore. We use the acronym LIAR for all areas of the media - Language, Industry, Audience and Representation...

and these...

You will learn to build on your skills of analysis, reflection and production in all the areas of media.

We look at messages encoded within a text, its ideologies and the various interpretations. How is meaning created through the images and sound in this music video?

You will look at national and international TV dramas...

You will be comparing old media texts with new. Mainstream with niche.

You will study the film industry - the Big Six and independent film companies looking at all areas from production, marketing and distribution

For Section B of the exam we will be looking at the film industry and comparing low budget and high budget films like the these:

We also go on some amazing trips! Every year we visit the BFI in South Bank and attend a media conference. We've had two trips to Manchester Media City where BBC and ITV are based and Bradford for the National Film and Media museum and we also went to Bath and BBC Bristol with a Harry Potter workshop and tour on the way. Last year we also had a special tour of Pinewood studios. Earlier this year, we went to Paris and Disneyland and attended some media workshops there. We feel it's very important to allow you to have as many real media experiences as we can.

Another finally another British Film Institute (BFI) nomination...

At A2, you will be learning about the music industry and making a music video like this one:
