André the Giant

By: Cameron Bowens

After wrestling in front of over 20,000 fans in Montreal he came across the WWE co-founder Vince McMahon who then signed Andre for the WWE where he got his name Andre the Giant, to recognize his size.

Early Life

Due to his size he had no trouble excelling in the wrestling world and quickly went from being an under card to being a headlining name. Inspired by King Kong he inquired the nick name the 8th wonder of the world which stayed with him through the majority of his career along with his other names such as Monster Eiffel Tower, The French Giant, and of course Andre the Giant

Andre was good in school but in 8th grade he dropped out because he thought that having a high school education was useless for a farm laborer. He did not enjoy being a farmer and moved to Paris at age 17

André René Roussimoff was born in Grenoble France, Mai 19, 1946. His parents, Boris and Marian Roussimoff had four other kids of average size but Andre suffered from Giantism. At age 12 Andre weighed 240 pounds and was over 6 feet tall which made him ineligible to fit on the school bus. Unfortunately his parents could not afford a big enough car for him to get to and from school, so Play Wrigter and Nobel Prize Winner Samuel Beckett lived near Andre and brought him to school in his truck

Where it Began

In Paris Andre was taught the art of Professional Wrestling by a local promoter who recognized the earning potential of his size. He began wrestling in Paris when he was noticed by Canadian promoter and wrestler Frank Valois who became his business manager and adviser. Andre quickly began making a name for himself from wrestling in Germany, Africa, New Zealand, and the UK

Interesting Facts:

Andre's last television appearance was on the 20 years of NWA/WCW on TBS. Sadly over the years, effects from giantism continued to tear down his body to where he needed knee and back surgery. His size was just to much for his heart that Andre suffered from a heart attack and died in a hotel room in Paris, France on january 27, 1993. His ashes where taken home to his North Carolina Ranch.

In 1987 Andre preformed in front of the biggest crowed in WWE history with over 90,000 fans in the Pontiac Silver Dome in Detroit Michigan to watch Andre the Giant wrestle the legend Hulk Hogan.

Besides wrestling, due to Andre's size he also stared in many films such as Trading Mom, Les Brilliant, The Greatest American Hero, Conan the Destroyer, Zorro, The Fall Guy, Casse-tete chinois pour le Judoka, The Six Million Dollar Man and his most famous Princess Bride
