King Agamemnon has sailed with his brother Menelaus and their armies to the port city of Aulis where they intend to embark on an expedition against the city of Troy. However, Agamemnon's men have refused to continue with the invasion unless their leader makes a sacrifice, and the sacrifice they demand is his oldest daughter, Iphigenia. Agamemnon has sent a messenger back home, telling his daughter to join him for her marriage ceremony to the young, idealistic warrior Achilles. In reality, he is planning on sacrificing her when she arrives. However, as her arrival nears, Agamemnon begins to change his mind. When Agamemnon's wife, Clytemnestra, arrives with Iphigenia, Agamemnon struggles to hide his true intentions from both of them. In the end, he is forced to decide between his duties to his brother and the military and his responsibility to his daughter.
