The theme of love is shown throughout the entire story by how both people gave up something so that they could show their love for each other through gifts. Even if Della was worried that her sacrifice would strain her relationship

With James only making $20 a week instead of $30 the Dillinghans have had a hard time with finances(350) This leaves Della with only $1.87 to buy James a gift with(350).
Della cuts off and sells her hair so her husband does not go without a Christmas gift(351-352). James sells his prized watch so his wife does not go without a gift as well(354).

Both James and Della seem to be in a state of poverty due to Jame's lack of income. This leads to the two finding creative ways to earn money for each others gifts.
