Exsanguination

Definition:

1. To drain of blood; make bloodless.

From the Latin stem "Sangui" which means blood.

In The Hot Zone by Richard Preston, a man by the name of Charles Monet was introduced.

Monet "leans over, head on his knees, and brings up an incredible quantity of blood from his stomach and spills it onto the floor with a gasping groan." (Preston 23)

When a person exsanguinates their body

is completely drained of blood.

"Pools of blood spread out around him, enlarging rapidly." (24)

When Monet began to

throw up blood, he

lost a large quantity.

In an average adult human body, there are about 12 pints of blood.

A person can lose up to four pints of blood before he exsanguinates and dies.

Blood will seep out of every orface on your body.

Exsanguination can take different amounts of time depending on where one is cut or where the source of the blood is.

  • For example, if a person's aorta, which is the major blood vessel leading to the heart, is completely severed, then that person can bleed out in seconds.
  • This could result from a car crash or serious accident, among other things.

Exsanguination is the preferred

method of blood removal when

slaughtering animals.

This is also known as a euthanasia or "mercy killing."

Whether it is an animal or

a human, in the course of

exsanguination, main arteries

are usually severed to ensure

excessive bloodflow.
