How has it affected the UK?

  • It has been named the most successful government policy of the last 30 years
  • It is responsible for reducing the wage gap between the low and high paid
  • 25% of workers have benefited from NMW

It does not apply to people that are self employed, company directors, volunteers, work experience workers and internships.

  • No minimum wage existed before 1998
  • The decline of trade union membership over recent decades and recognition that employees on low pay weren't becoming members caused it
  • It was opposed by the conservative party and agreed by Liberal democrats
  • There were periods of high unemployment beforehand

What is it?

The LPC was established as an independent body to advise the Government on the National Minimum Wage.

It was first submitted in June 1998 and the government accepted the recommended wage of £3.60 per hour

The National Minimum Wage is reviewed every year

The national minimum wage is the minimum pay per hour that all workers are entitled to by law. It is currently £6.50 per hour for workers aged 21 plus and is £5.13 per hour for workers aged 18-20.

£6.50 per hour for adult workers (21+)

£5.13 per hour for 18-to-20-year-olds

£3.79 per hour for under-18s who have finished compulsory education

£2.73 per hour for apprentices under 19 years old or 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship
