from Book 12 of the Odyssey

Odysseus wakes up from his slumber, his men have disobeyed him and have eaten Helios' cattle. Odysseus asks Zeus and all the other Gods to forgive his men for their sinful ways. Lampetia daughter of Helios ran to her father and told him about what Odysseus's men had done.

Odysseus prays to the gods in solitude, hoping one might show him a way of salvation. He made supplication to the gods who as an answer only closed his eyes under slow drops of sleep. While asleep Odysseus had a dream that Eurylochus had allowed his men that eat the cattle.

Helios tells the Gods that Odysseus' men have killed his kine and they must pay fully for doing it. If the Gods don't make them pay fully then Helios says that he will go down forever to light the dead men in the underworld.

As long as the ship was stocked with plenty of food, the men could resist the temptation to eat the sacred cattle. However,The ship soon ran out of food.

Zeus delivers his punishment with his thunderbolt destroying their ship. All of the men aboard die but Odysseus, who stays afloat clubbing to the remnants of the broken ship.
