Why We Say #YaMeCanse

What Happened?

#HowToGetInvolved

  • On September 26, 2014, normalistas from the college of Ayotzinapa rented buses to Iguala, Mexico to protest

  • Iguala Police Force opened fire resulting in the deaths of six students and bystanders. Then the police kidnapped forty three students.

  • After some "investigations" there were two possible conclusions drawn

1. After local police kidnapped students by orders of the mayor and his wife they handed the 43 normalistas to the Los Guerreros Unidos, a local gang. The students were killed, burned and thrown into a river.

2. The government in a hurry to close the case ignored the obvious signs that the conclusions may be wrong.

  • After the news broke out protests began all around the world.

  • Amidst the protest Attorney General Jesus Murillo held a press conference to talk about the situation and when he was tired of answering questions he said "ya me canse"

  • Then on January 27, 2015 Mexican attorney general Jesus Murillo Karam declared the students officially dead.

Both my parents are Mexican and I identify as Mexican. Growing up I would hear my mother telling me wonderful stories about Mexico. She would say it was a wonderful place to live in with open fields and fresh air. As of recently my mother describes Mexico as a mass grave site.

When I first started following the case of the forty three missing students I would read article after article and after every sentence I would feel a hot rage boil inside of me followed by complete disbelief. I contemplated how a police force sworn to protect the people and who work for the people could even think about doing anything like that.
