Ancient Greek Diet

Drinks

The ancient Greeks normally drank wine, but they also had milk from the goats and sheep they used to make cheese.

Cheese

Cheese is made from cow, sheep and goat milk. The Greek myth for how cheese was discovered is something like this. The Greek gods sent Aristaios, son of Apollo, to the greek villagers to teach them the art of cheese making. Although in reality, it was probably accidentally discovered during the transport of milk in young animals stomachs.

Figs, Olives and Grapes

Figs, olives and grapes are mostly just commonly grown foods in Greece. The myth for how olives were first grown in Greece was because Athena wanted to beat Poseidon and have a city named after her, so she planted the olive tree. Dionysus is the god of grapes and helped teach them how to make wine, which was the most common drink in Greece. For Figs, the myth is that the Goddess Ge turned into a fig tree to save her son while Zeus was pursuing both of them.

Fish

Fish was eaten because it was easy to catch and tasted good

Bread

Demeter is the Goddess of grain and bread.

Wheat was a grain that was grown whenever there was enough flat land. Bread was dipped in wine and eaten when soggy.

Apples, Beans and Lentils

Apples beans and lentils were eaten in

the winter as dried foods. They were eaten as dry foods because they were easy to grow and easy to dry. The myth for beans is that a kid called Kyamites learned to grow beans and was turned into the god of beans.
