  • He is against slavery and the slave trade that is occurring in North America
  • Uses Bible to show how it is a crime
  • Work was inspired by a petition that circulated Boston in 1700
  • Story of a man (Adam) and his wife who were held as slaves and their freeing.
  • Adam was to be freed and his owner refused it.
  • Led to a "war" between the slave and his owner.
  • Four years later Sewall published The Athenian Oracle which was yet again expressing his disapproval of slavery.
