Arachne's curse

  • Athena asked her, "But why compare yourself to the gods?"
  • Arachne said that Athena should come and measure her skill against hers
  • Then Athena threw off her disguise and stood before Arachne in all her glory
  • Then Athena said, "You may have your wish. Sit down at your loom and let us compete"
  • Athena had woven a beautiful picture of the Olympian gods in all their majesty and glory
  • Arachne had also woven beautifully, even Athena had to admit she was talented
  • Arachne had woven an irreverent scene making fun of Zeus and his wives
  • Athena was furious, she tore the tapestry and turned her into a spider

Arachne

  • Athena's companion was Nike, the spirit of victory
  • Athena led armies and stood behind the artists of Greece, and taught them fine and useful arts
  • Athena's pupils was Arachne
  • She was a simple, country girl, and was talented at the loom
  • People came far to see her weaving's
  • She said she had learned nothing from Athena, and that she was better than the goddess
  • This hurt Athena's pride so she disguised herself as an old woman, and she went to the girl to talk sense into her

Athena

Birth

  • Zeus depended on Metis because of her wise council
  • Mother Earth warned him, if she gave birth to a son, he would take his throne away
  • He knew this couldn't happen, but he also knew that he could not do without Metis's advice, so he decided he would swallow her
  • Zeus decided that they would play a game of changing shapes
  • When Metis changed into a fly, Zeus swallowed her
  • She guided him from there

Birth (continued)

  • When Metis was going to have a girl, Zeus began to suffer from pounding headaches and screamed in agony
  • All of the gods came rushing to him when Hephaestus grabbed his tools and split open his fathers skull
  • Then, out sprang Athena fully grown
  • The gods stood in awe

Athens

  • Then Athena gave her gift
  • She planted an olive tree in a crevice on the rock
  • It was the first olive tree ever seen
  • Athena's gift was judged between the two
  • Athena's gift gave wood, food, and oil so the city was hers
  • From her temple on top of the Acropolis, she watched over her city, Athens, with her bird, the wise owl
  • Under her leadership the Athenians grew famous for their arts and crafts

The Great City

  • Athena and her uncle (Poseidon) grew very fond of a certain city in Greece
  • Both of them claimed the city, then they decided whoever gave it the finest gift could have it
  • Both gods stood at the top of the Acropolis, the flat rock that hoovered the city
  • Poseidon struck the rock with is trident and a spring welled up
  • The people marveled but the water was very salty and not very useful
