14th Century

Spectacles were first made in the 14th Century. No one knows who invented them.

1590

Hans and Zacharias Janssen create the first microscope.

1675

Joseph Jackson Lister finds that combining two different types of glass at different distances reduces chromatic aberration.

Modern Microscopes

1981

The scanning tunneling microscope was invented by Gerd Binning and Heinrich Rohrer. It allows a 3D view of specimen.

21st Century
