Historical Context

In 1961, Kennedy requested to change the Social Security Act to provide Health Insurance to the elderly.

In 1964, the Senate said that private health insurance was unprovided to a group of people.

In 1965, the Bill was passed.

Why was the bill passed?

The 1950 census showed the elderly population had quadrupled from 1900. Two thirds of older Americans had an income of less than $1,000 annually, and only one in eight had health insurance.

It addressed the need of health insurance for the poor and elderly people of America.

What did it accomplish?

It gave people who did not have health insurance health insurance.
