Katy Perry is a poet!

Stop laughing! I'm serious, and I'll prove it to you!

The repetition of the "a" sound in plastic and bag in this line is an example of assonance. Remember, repetition just has to happen more than once, not necessarily bunches of times!

The Song:

The w's=alliteration!

Sound Devices in Song Lyrics

Consonance is almost the opposite of alliteration. It is the repetition of consonant sounds at the middle or ends of words.

For example: The cat went out at eight.

Alliteration is the repetition of initial consonant sounds. For example: Sally sells seashells by the sea shore.

Words that make the sound of the object they represent

Example: Meow for cat; choo-choo for train

Consonance

Onomatopoeia

Assonance is the repetition of the same or similar vowel sounds in the middle of words.

For example: Such a sunny summer day.

Beware: You MUST read poetry out loud to find assonance! Some words have the same vowels, but the vowel sounds are different. You cannot find assonance without hearing the poem!

Assonance

Rhythm:

The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry

Rhyme:

The repetition of sounds, especially at the ends of

lines of poetry

Yes, because Katy Perry uses these poetic devices purposefully, that makes her a poet, if only in the loosest sense of the word. Let's take a look-see:

Using Katy Perry's "Firework"

ignite, light, and shine all have the long "i" sound, which is an example of assonance!

Also, the "t" sound on ignite, light, let and it is an example of consonance

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag,

Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?

Do you ever feel, feel so paper-thin

Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?

Do you ever feel already buried deep?

Six feet under screams, but no one seems to hear a thing

Do you know that there's still a chance for you?

'Cause there's a spark in you

You just gotta ignite the light, and let it shine

Just own the night like the Fourth of July

'Cause baby, you're a firework

Come on, show 'em what you're worth

Make 'em go "oh, oh, oh!"

As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you're a firework

Come on, let your colors burst

Make 'em go "oh, oh, oh!",

You're gonna leave 'em falling down oh oh

You don't have to feel like a waste of space

You're original, cannot be replaced

If you only knew what the future holds

After a hurricane, comes a rainbow

Maybe the reason why all the doors are closed

So you could open one that leads you to the perfect road

Like a lightning bolt, your heart will glow

And when it's time you know

You just gotta ignite the light, and let it shine

Just own the night like the Fourth of July

'Cause baby, you're a firework

Come on, show 'em what you're worth

Make 'em go "oh, oh, oh!"

As you shoot across the sky-y-y

Baby, you're a firework

Come on, let your colors burst

Make 'em go "oh, oh, oh!"

You're gonna leave 'em falling down oh oh

Boom, boom, boom

Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

It's always been inside of you, you, you

And now it's time you let it through-ooh-ooh

'Cause baby, you're a firework

Come on, show 'em what you're worth

Make 'em go "oh, oh, oh!"

As you shoot across the sky-y-y

So, there you have it! There are 2 things I want you to take away from this presentation:

1. Katy Perry uses a lot of poetic devices in her poems. In fact, almost any song will have at least a few poetic devices in it. Songs ARE poetry!

2. Poetry is not scary. It can be fun!

Now find a song that's currently on the radio that seems like it might have some poetic devices in it.

Rhyme:

"Closed" and "road" rhyme

"know" and "glow" rhyme

So, this stanza rhymes

There are a TON more examples in here, but I think I've made my point . . .

Pow! That's onomatopoeia!
