Shakira - Hips don't Lie

Beyonce - Girls

However...

There is some criticism of Laura Mulveys Theory ‘Male Gaze’

Some women have said they enjoy being looked at e.g. beauty pageants.

Womens Perspective

Many women see the male gaze as degrading to women because it portrays the women as objects and not people. Many women believe that when they are watching other women on media now they can only view them from a male’s perspective.

Laura Mulvey - The Male Gaze

Features

Examples

Features of the male gaze include when a camera is solely focused on the women. For example the curves on her body are often shot as very close up angles. This is therefore putting you in the eyes of a man.

The Male Gaze

Laura Mulvey came up with the theory of the male gaze in 1975.

What is the Gaze?

The gaze is how an audience views the people that are presented on screen. The male gaze occurs, for example in a music video, when you are put in the perspective of a heterosexual male

Shakira - Hips Don't Lie

Example

An example in a music video where the male gaze is made present throughout is 'Shakira - Hips dont lie'. This is because throughout the video we see the camera focused in on Shakira's

hips and body whilst

she is sexually belly -

dancing using shots

such as close-up and

extreme close ups.
