Escape

Like Mendez once said "Argo Fuck yourself !"

- The day of the escape some of the Six diplomats were hungover.

- After getting up they all had to get into character and know their roles well.

- The driver of the car they got into was Iranian and the 6 had to be cautious of what they say.

- After looking at the airport they said it was clear and got in no problem.

- One of the diplomats went into another line for non smokers cause it was shorter and got to the front before Mendez. Mendez scared that the passport would not work just looked and hoped it would. It passed but only because he played it right.

- After passing through inspections 20 minutes before the fligth was supposed to take off the plane was delayed.

- The plane was fixed and later they all boarded and left.

- On the plane they all screamed in celebration.

- when the second flight landed in Washington the diplomats were taken in a van to a mountain lodge fed pizza and drank Heiniken.

- Canada took Credit for all of what happened.

- Mendez received his medal in secrecy at a banquet with only 100 of his comrades attended his family was not allowed to go.

Attack On Us Embassy November 4, 1979

  • Chain link fence by press office is cut open.
  • Women came in first with signs that had written on them, Don't be afraid we just want to set in. They meant sit though.
  • Women going in first was a strategy used by the attackers to make the marines think twice before opening fire.
  • In a matter of minutes the embassy was surrounded by thousands of men and women.
  • Military ordered not to fire due to fear of retaliation from the crowd. Everyone inside thought it was another protest.
  • Attackers get in by 2 ways one by breaking into and unbarred window in the basement and the other by taking a man hostage and barging there way in.
  • Attackers had done a lot to prepare for the attack

Lead Up to the Attack

  • The United States needed to keep good relations with Iran in order to keep a close eye on the Soviet Union.
  • The United States wanted an Embassy in Iran to do that but in order to do so they had to show support to Shah.
  • Shah was not liked by the people of Iran and they grew furious when he fled and the U.S. took him in.
  • When that happened Khomieni took power and started a movement to get Shah returned to the Iran to face his crimes.
  • Khomieni was advocating to the students in Iran to attack the United States Embassy in Tehran.

  • The idea was that they would all pose as a Canadian Film Crew scouting locations for a fake movie named Argo.
  • The Idea worked and Mendez rescued all 6 of the Embassy Workers.

- The passports were a back up plan in case Antonio could not get in to Iran. Instructions would be given to them on what to do.

- The plan was to use the second set to get out. The second set had imprinted with operational visa.

- The exfiltration was scheduled for January 28.

- Lot's of research done on the airport to make the risk taking not as bad. The two ways were passive and to send a probe.
