A screw is a spiral inclined plane. It is a simple machine that is designed to cut through another substance.

There are different types of screws. Wood screws are made to cut through timber. Boat propellers are screws that cut through water and aircraft propellers are screws that cut through the air.

Screws are more useful than nails when you need to secure wood together. The spiral inclined plane around a metal screw is called the thread. Their large thread allows them to hold the timber tightly and when used with PVA glue. The timber or joint is almost inseparable.

As a screwdriver turns a screw into a piece of wood, the timber moves along the spiral ramp. The screwdriver is a force multiplier for a screw. This enables you to drive the screw into the wood with much less force than would be needed if you hammered it directly or screwed it in with your hands.
