Salvadoran culture is the result of the mixture of the indigenous culture.

The Salvadoran ancestors, that is to say, the Pipiles were influenced by the customs of the Spaniards with respect to the subject of the death.

The Spanish combined their customs with the similar Mesoamerican festival.

Agriculture, hunting and fishing were the pillars of the economic system of my ancestors Pipiles

SOME WORDS

Many words currently in use in El Salvador have origins in Nahuat, the language spoken in the region by the Pipils. For example:

  • Atol: from Atuli: a hot drink made of ground corn.
  • Ayote: from Ayut: squash
  • Cacahuate: from cacahatle: peanut
  • Caite: from cacti: sandal
  • Chirmol: a condiment made of tomatoes, onions, and green chili.
  • Elote: from elut: green corn
  • Milpa: from mili, pan: cornfield
  • Mish: from mishtun: cat
  • Tusa: dried corn husk

WHO WERE "THE PIPILS"?

The Pipils or Cuzcatlecs are an indigenous people who live in western El Salvador, which they call Cuzcatlan. Their language is called Nahuat or Pipil, related to the Toltec people of the Nahuatl Nation.

The name "Pipil" derives from the Nahua pipiltin which means "nobles" or "children."

This indigenous people speak Nahuat or Pipil, it is related to Nahuatl.

Pipils arrived from central Mexico until 610 A.D. They were the largest group at the time of the Spanish Conquest and maintained the indigenous identity beyond the matanza of 1930s.
