8 CHARACTERISTICS of CIVILIZATION

As farmers settled in fertile river valleys,

they began to grow extra food. This extra

food increased the populations in time, and the small settlements grew into cities.

Government

As cities developed and expanded, the food supply and irrigation systems needed to be maintained. Laws were made to regulate and control the people and the resources.

Religion

Religion was created in order to explain the natural world and to establish order. Gods & goddesses were symbols and guardians of cities, temples, and natural phenomena.

Social Structure

As jobs became specialized, so did the status of individuals based on the needs of the city/state. Generally, slaves were at the bottom and warriors and kings at the top. As education grew, the value of educated trades often outranked the warrior classes.

Writing

Writing was developed to track trade goods and food. As the need for information became more important, so did the need for scribes and educated classes. Writing also became a tool for creative expression, religious belief, and for the development of laws and social order.

Art

& Architecture

This expressed the beliefs and values of a civilization. Writings and structures define a culture and give insight on the valued aspects of religions and societies.

Inventions

Each ancient civilization is credited with an invention that has contributed to its growth and development. To this day, many of these innovations have added to our daily lives.

People & Events

Ancient history is riddled with interesting people & events that shaped each period and contributed to the civilization we have studied.
