octopus reproduction

females will eventually find some form of cave and spread her eggs over the walls

Sam Mattingly

courtship.. or not

The female will then spread the sperm over the eggs to fertilize them.

The gestation period can take anywhere from 2 the 10 weeks depending on the species of octopus.

The female will spend the remainder of her life not eating and watching over her eggs keeping them clean and safe. they die shortly after the eggs are hatched.

Once the eggs hatch they are on there own.

octopus are mostly

monecious creatures

however since they are technically mollusca they can be dioecious

There is no true courtship for the octopus.

Octopus don't live very long so they mature quickly. when the female is ready she realises feramones to draw male octopus towards her.

The only thing a male will do is show his suckers to prove his gender. other than that it is more like conduction bussiness

males and females have very

few noticeable difference's within

the species.

therefore there is no prettier gender

the only difference is that the 3rd tentacle on the right side of the males body is called a hectocotylus or as we would say. its his penis

females have usual femal reproductive organs oviducts ovaries and so on

Here's where it gets tricky

like most species the octopus' only job in life is to reproduce.

Most octopus will only live up to 1 to 2 years.

because time is so short mating can occur at anytime and any place there is no true reason for or why. it is as simple as finding any female.

males have two ways of giving their sperm to the females.

1) males can manually insert their arm or penis into the oviducts of the female and release the sperm packets

females can have many mates throughout her life. she can also collect sperm and preserve it her oviducts for 2/3rds of her life

females collect as much sperm as they can to increase the chances of their eggs being fertilized

therefore females and males are polygamous

2) males can tear off their arm and give it to the female to store so that later when she lays eggs she can fertilize them herself
