Weird Animal's Name

Scientific Classification

Niche

The animal that I chose was called a Maned Wolf. The Maned Wolf derives it's name from the characteristic mane on it's neck which stands erect when it senses danger.

Habitat

The Maned Wolf eats crop pests such as rabbits and small rodents.

Genus: Chrysocyon

Species: C. brachyurus

Adaptations

Anatomy

The Maned Wolf is found in grassland, savanna, dry shrub forest, forest-edge habitat, and river areas.

Their long legs enable them to see above the tall grass- an adaptation that helps them hunt for food and avoid predators. Their large ears also allow them to hear their prey from far away. They can also raise their mane when they sense danger- the mane gives the impression of greater size to intimidate any predator.

Ecosystem

Maned Wolfs are nocturnal, preferring to rest under forest cover during the day, and hunt until sunrise.

The Maned Wolf is listed as CITES Appendix II, U.S. ESA-Endangered, and IUCIV Vulnerable. Habitat Destruction, Persecution by angry poultry farmers, hunting for sport, and live capture are factors that threaten the maned wolf.

The Maned Wolf eats small mammals such as cuis (wild guinea pigs), rabbits, and young viscachas (burrowing rodents) as well as pacas and agoutis, both fast running birds. Insects, reptiles, and birds are a regular part of it's diet, but it also eats fruits, sugar cane, and other plants.
