Downward Social Comparison

by Taylor Gilley And Taylor Brill

DEFINING DOWNWARD SOCIAL COMPARISON

- a way of feeling better about one self relative to others who are doing worse

I may be stuck in this bowl, but at least I'm not that guy!

It's Kelly's Birthday

Kelly is super excited for her birthday. John has promised her a romantic dinner and flowers. John arrives at Kelly's house in sweat pants. Kelly is not pleased as John tells her they are going to Arby's. She was expecting a romantic dinner and something more than sweatpants on this date. However, when Sarah calls to tell Kelly that her boyfriend Ben completely forgot about there anniversary Kelly doesn't feel as bad about her Arby's date.

Comparing to Upward Social Comparison

In contrast to downward social comparison that was just discussed. One can also look at upward social comparison.

  • What is upward social comparison?
  • evaluating oneself in relation to others who are doing better in that domain

Two best friends

Beth and Jen are both sophomores at VCU. They are both in the same math class. Jen is flourishing in the class, getting no less than a 90 on assignments and tests. However, Beth is not doing very well as she is struggling to make a solid C on assignments and tests. Beth feels very discouraged and keeps thinking she will never be doing as well as Jen in the class.

How it Relates to a Relationship

  • Most relationships will use downward social comparison rather than upward social comparison
  • Utilized in relationships often when feelings of insecurity arise
  • Often occurs due to relationship problems
  • Comparison to other relationships allows one to feel more secure in their relationship or feel as though their relationship is superior

Derogating Alternative Partners

  • protecting a current relationship by evaluating possible alternatives to the relationship negatively
  • When partners are threatened by others who are attractive, they tend to find flaws that will protect the current relationship.
  • By creating flaws in alternative partners they can make themselves feel better for looking at another compared to those who don't find flaws.
