Types of speeches

Introductory Speech: speech that provides an audience with a unique perspective on the person introduced (305)

  • Acquaint the audience with a person
  • Establish credibility of the person
  • Generate enthusiasm for the person

Be brief, be accurate, be appropriate

Your turn:

In pairs, choose a commemorative speaking style that appeals to you. Next, together craft an impromptu speech using your chosen style. Take some time to think about this. You will present the speech as a pair before the class

Speeches of Commemoration: speech that praises, honors, recognizes, or pays tribute to a person, an event, an idea, or an institution (307)

  • Speech of tribute: speech given to honor someone
  • Speech of award: speech given to present a specific award to someone and describe why that person is receiving the award (Oscars)

Share what is unique & special, express sincere appreciation, and tell the truth

Use stories & anecdotes, descriptive language, vivid images, compelling rhythm, and emotion

Acceptance speech: speech that expresses gratitude, appreciation, and pleasure at receiving an honor or a gift (309)

Speech to Entertain: lighthearted speech that addresses issues or ideas in a humorous way
