GOEBBELS CONTROL OF MEDIA

THE FÜHRER PRINCIPLE

“When I took power there were more than 6,000,000 unemployed and the farmers seemed doomed in decay. Today you must admit that I have fulfilled your promises. The Four Year Plan will give permanent employment to those workmen who are now being released from the armament industry. It is evidence of the gigantic economic development of our people that there is today a shortage of trained workmen in many industries.”

INTRODUCTION

  • Master of propaganda
  • Devoted to Hitler
  • Worked in The Ministry of Propaganda
  • His aim was to push the Nazi message so that people could not escape or resist it.
  • Goebbels personified Nazi ideas and the Nazi state in Hitler
  • Used Hitler as the vehicle for winning the hearts and minds of the German people.
  • He became the Master propagandist of the Nazi regime and dictator of its cultural life for twelve years.

Once they succeeded in ending democracy and turning Germany into a one-party dictatorship, the Nazis orchestrated a massive propaganda campaign to win the loyalty and cooperation of Germans. The Nazi Propaganda Ministry, directed by Dr. Joseph Goebbels, took control of all forms of communication in Germany: newspapers, magazines, books, public meetings, and rallies, art, music, movies, and radio. Viewpoints in any way threatening to Nazi beliefs or to the regime were censored or eliminated from all media.

BOOK BURNINGS

  • Spring of 1933, Nazi student organizations, professors, and librarians made up long lists of books they thought should not be read by Germans.
  • May 10, 1933, Nazis raided libraries and bookstores across Germany.
  • They marched by torchlight in nighttime parades, sang chants, and threw books into huge bonfires. On that night more than 25,000 books were burned.

ROLE OF SCHOOLS

  • Played an important role in spreading Nazi ideas.
  • Newly written books were brought in to teach students blind obedience to the party and love for Hitler.
  • After-school meetings of the Hitler Youth and the League of German Girls trained children to be faithful to the Nazi party.
