Strengths and Weaknesses

Relationship/ Modern Connection Cont.

Dionysus, a figure in Lycurgus' story, is also featured in the series as less than amicable, and is referenced wherever wine is to be found.

Background Cont.

Relationship/ Modern Connection

Background

*Phineas helps the original heroes in search of the Golden Fleece on their quest. A similar quest is depicted in the second novel of the popular Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Sea of Monsters.

*Some policymakers and politicians have been compared to Lycurgus, though without clear inclination other than perhaps a tendency to become angry easily.

*How valid the Phineas and Ferb connection is isn't quite clear- actually, there is likely no correlation.

Weaknesses:

  • Mortals
  • Flawed judgement
  • Willingness to challenge the gods
  • Overconfidence
  • Minimal discipline

Strengths:

  • Royalty
  • Phineus: Able to be helped by heroes

Lycurgus:

  • Attacked Dionysus (wine god) while either traveling or as an infant (myths vary)
  • Killed Dionysus' nurse (infant myth), Ambrosia, with his axe
  • Punishment: condemned to insanity; in his state of madness Lycurgus brutally murdered his wife and family
  • Eventually killed himself; cut off his feet beforehand

Background:

Both kings offended gods; Phineus offended Zeus because he prophesied too truly, and Lycurgus attacked Dionysus and killed his nurse.

Phineus:

  • Revealed too many godly truths to humans
  • Punishment: plagued with Harpies; food was desecrated and stolen
  • Liberated by Jason and Argonatus; helped them find the Golden Fleece
  • Helped by the goddess Iris to avoid deaths of the Harpies
