Viet Cong and North Vietnam Fighting Strategies and Weapons

The Tet Offensive

  • The Tet Offensive was a "masterpiece of deception" (Spencer, American History)
  • It was a planned attack by forces of the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese against South Vietnam and the United States.
  • Campaign of surprise attacks against military and civilian control centers throughout South Vietnam
  • Aimed to encourage the United States to scale back its support in the region.
  • Due to the war being covered by American news, these attacks made support for the war decrease

North Vietnamese Weapons

Who are the North Vietnamese?

  • The North Vietnamese were supplied most of their weapons by the Soviets
  • They had twice as many tanks than the South Vietnam army
  • Began to use medium and heavy artillery on the South in the 1970s
  • This artillery ranged from 76 to 130-millimeter guns and howitzers
  • The North Vietnamese sought to reunify the country following its division in 1954
  • Received Soviet help for this effort and to expand Communism in Southeast Asia

Who are the Viet Cong?

About the War

An 11-year war between the pro-soviet North Vietnam and the retaliating South Vietnam. North Vietnam sought to reunify the country following its partition in 1954, and received Soviet backing for this effort and to spread Communism in South Asia. As a result of this dispute between the two regions, guerrilla forces in the South emerged under the political leadership of the National Liberation Front. This force became known as the Viet Cong.

  • Nationalist forces in South Vietnam, the People's Liberation Armed Forces (PLAF), colloquially known as the Viet Cong, emerged under the political leadership of the National Liberation Front (NLF)
  • The Viet Cong used guerrilla warfare as their main fighting strategy
  • Soviets provided the main weaponry of the AK-47 rifle

Guerrilla Warfare

Guerrilla warfare is a form of irregular warfare where a small group of combatants ambush, sabotage, raid, or perform hit-and-runs to fight a larger, less mobile threat. These spontaneous attacks usually happen in the night or in the jungle.

How the Viet Cong Used Guerrilla Warfare

  • The Viet Cong used guerrilla warfare in ways such as digging elaborate tunnel complexes that served as supply depots, field hospitals, and hiding ares to surprise oncoming enemies
  • They also used booby traps in the jungles of Vietnam including sharpened bamboo stakes, and mines like the Bouncing Betty
