People with diabetes..

People who have diabetes cannot produce their own insulin naturally - this means they will always have high levels of glucose flowing around their body. This is dangerous - can cause strokes, heart attacks, kidney failure, vision loss and poor circulation to the feet.

The Endocrine System

Other glands you need to know

The pancreas is an organ which produces insulin and glucagon.

Glucagon's function - it increases the levels of glucose in your blood by breaking down glycogen

Other glands you need to know

After eating a chocolate bar..

The thyroid is a gland which produces thyroxine.

Thyroxine's function - Increases metabollic rate of cells

What is the endocrine system?

A chocolate bar has lots of glucose. Once you eat the chocolate bar, your pancreas will release insulin, which turns the glucose into glycogen. Glycogen is stored away until you need it.

Later on, as you are running low on energy, your pancreas will release glucagon, which turns the glycogen back into glucose, to be used as energy.

What are endocrine 'glands' ?

It is a system made up of 'glands' in the human body. These glands produce useful chemicals (hormones) which have effects on the body. The hormones travel via the bloodstream.

A gland is an organ that produces a useful substance (hormone) that travels via the bloodstream to act on a specific part of the body. For example, there are adrenal glands.

Adrenal glands produce adrenaline.

Your Task

The pancreas is an organ which produces insulin and glucagon.

Insulin's function - it reduces the levels of glucose in your blood by storing it away as glycogen

Use your laptops and choose a hormone from this list:

Adrenaline

Insulin

Glucagon

Oestrogen

Testosterone

Progesterone

Thyroxine

Once you have chosen a hormone, answer the following questions:

1. Which endocrine gland releases this hormone?

2. What is the effect of this hormone?

3. What body parts does this hormone act upon?

4. Under which situations is this particular hormone released?

5. What complications can occur if you cannot produce/dont have enough of your chosen hormone?

Other glands you need to know

The organs of the Endocrine System

The ovary is a gland that is found in females. It produces the hormones progesterone and oestrogen.

Progesterone's function - causes thickening of uterus walls for pregnancy

Oestrogen's function - causes female sexual characteristics to develop
