- 1880-1921 was the largest

move of people in history

- 23 million people moved to

America

- Started coming from southern

and eastern Europe

- Chinese Immigration on the

west coast

Making the Move

- Advertising a great life in America reached Europe

through family members who made the move

- Railroads and Steamships recruited workers

- Very emotional to say goodbye knowing they may

never see their family again

- Their entire savings were depleted to make the

move, leaving them with no money when they

arrived

- Steamship travel took 8-12 days

- Stayed in steerage part of the ships, often with the

rats.......EEWWWWWWW

- Diseases and bad smells filled the small living

quarters

bay of San Francisco
