American Sign Language 1

Pidgin Signed English

Pidgin Signed English is a combination of American Sign Language and English. A pidgin is a language which develops naturally when people who do not know each other's language wish to communicate with each other.

Signing Exact English

Signing Exact English is a system of manual communication that strives to be an exact representation of English vocabulary and grammar. It is one of a number of such systems in use in English-speaking countries. (Wikipedia)

Facts

Sign language is not a universal language -- each country has its own sign language, and regions have dialects, much like the many languages spoken all over the world.

  • A form of ASL has been used in the U.S. for over two hundred years.
  • Signed Exact English (SEE) was developed in 1972 by Gerilee Gustason.
  • With PSE, someone might sign most of the English words of a sentence and use approximately the English syntax.
