Romantic

One of the original genres, along with drama. Ancient Greek: Humor was a celebration of Dionysus, God of mischief. Ancient Roman: Comedy changed into love being held back by the father, who was the villain. Renaissance: Almost disappeared, only scenes of plays and stories were comedic. Elizabethan: Took off with Shakespeare (Midsummer Night's Dream, Taming of the Shrew, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, etc.) Most of these plays were a struggle of love and often had a happy ending. 17th - 18th Century: Comedy and tragedy were strictly separate; foolery and impressions were introduced. Modern: More open; love tragedies to every day problems to obsessions to foolery.

The 1895 movie called Tables Turned on the Gardener as the first comedy film by the Lumière brothers

Comedy-horror films are first and foremost comedies, but they have horror elements. Examples of comedy-horror films include: Scary Movies (2000-2013), A Haunted House (2014), The Visit (2015)

Bibliography

The romantic comedy film sub-genre typically involves the development of a relationship between a man and a woman. The stereotyped plot line follows the "boy-gets-girl", "boy-loses-girl", "boy gets girl back again" sequence. Examples of this style of film include Pretty Woman (1990), and Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994).

A parody or spoof film is a comedy that makes a mockery of other film genres or classic films. Such films have sarcasm, stereotyping, mockery of scenes from other films, and the obviousness of meaning in a character's actions. Examples of this form include Blazing Saddles (1974), Airplane! (1980), and Young Frankenstein (1974).

The “Shadow of Confusion” : We’re introduced to the hero and heroine, who are clearly marked as destined to be together (along with possibly a few emerging beta couples), but they’re being separated. This could be physical separation (maybe they haven’t met yet), or emotional separation (see A Midsummer Night’s Dream‘s Demetrius and Helena for a good example of this). Either way, there’s confusion, miscommunication, and frustration, and the designated couples aren’t hooking up.

It Gets Worse: The confusion previously mentioned gets even more convoluted. The darkness separating everyone is at its thickest, and the tension for the characters is at its peak. Things are going disastrously for our hero and heroine.

The Confusion is Lifted: Someone or something explains the misunderstandings, all the characters breathe collective sighs of relief, weddings are arranged, and the bad guy is either punished or repents in time for the engagement party.

Typical Characters

Comedy films can be categorized in several ways.:

The setting is the environment where the story and action takes place.

The theme or topic refers to the issues that the film revolves around.

The mood is the emotional tone of the film.

Format refers to the way the film was shot or the manner of presentation.

An additional way of categorizing film genres is by the target audience.

Idiotic people are usually used in contrast with a group of “normal” people, this shows the contrast of the personalities and emphasises the stupidity of the folly character. Also, above average intelligent people are used (such as Big Bang Theory), the comedy is emphasised because they are smart but very socially awkward and unaware of social boundaries with “normal” people. A common attribute within characters is sarcasm.

Setting: a comedy sketch always occur in bright places. Location that are known for social events are often used.

Camerawork/shots: The camerawork used for most comedies, is naturalistic and the characters are filmed in a way that shows that no one is better.

Sound: Sound is important in the comedy genre. • Diegetic sound like the dialogue needs to be clear to make sure that it be can heard and laughed at • Non diegetic sound is also important, edited sound can be used to place emphasis on certain scenes

Lighting: The lighting in is commonly bright or natural light, because this creates a realistic environment. Bright and happy colours are used to show that the scene is happy, The scenes are done in daylight.

Props: Props are very important in comedy; objects that may hurt a character is well know. Props are used in slapstick comedy because it is vital in slapstick comedy

Comedy is a genre of film in which the main emphasis is on humor.

These films are designed to entertain the audience through amusement, and often work by exaggerating characteristics of real life for humorous effect.

Silent

Silent comedy refers to a style of acting, related to but distinct from mime, invented to bring comedy into the medium of film during the silent film era in the 1900s to the 1920s before a synchronized soundtrack on film was available. Silent comedy is still practiced, but much less frequently. It has influenced comedy in modern media as well. Example of a Silent Comedy:

SlapStick

These films are edited by bugdeting, logging, first assembly, rough cut & variations, first cut, fine cut, and final cut.

Black

Slapstick comedy relies predominately on visual depictions of events, and therefore does not require sound. Accordingly, the sub genre was ideal for silent movies.

Example of a Slapstick Comedy:

Black comedy film deals with normally taboo subjects, including, death, murder, sexual relations, suicide and war, in a satirical manner. Examples of this form include The War of the Roses (1989) and Keeping Mum (2005)
