Stories about Wisakecahk are only to be told in the WINTER. If they are told in the Summer (when people should be working as much as they can) lizards will suck the narrators blood!

Then he placed animals on the land.

The Origin of the Moon

So the next day, the children began to quarrel over who would start the sun's fire.

One day the father told his children that he was dying and that they must tend to the sun.

Grandmother's Creation Story

But the animals were sad because they had no purpose.

The people of earth began to worry because the sun was late coming up.

So the Creator decided to create a man and a woman for the creatures to take care of, nurture, and teach.

So Wisakecahk went to the sun to see what the problem was. He told the brother and sister to stop fighting because the people on Earth needed the sun to live!

The humans soon grew powerful and realized that they could kill and eat the animals.

He told the boy to stay and keep the sun burning.

He told the girl that she would keep a fire in another place at night called the moon.

The Creator wanted to punish the humans by taking the animals away, but the animals took pity on the humans and wanted to return to Earth.

That is how the Cree view the relationship between animals and humans.

So, in order to protect the animals, the Creator made the animals afraid of the humans so they wouldn't approach them and also made them unable to communicate with the humans.

That is where the Cree Indians believe the moon came from.
