Corporations and even our government are giving us false pretenses of The American Dream. They are trying to show us that the material things in life are what we need to strive for. That money or cars or big houses are the things that make you happy and complete.
They want us to believe that we are better than other countries who aren't "crazy driven hard working believers" like us. That we are deserving of all the material things that we overpraise. They want us to think that working all the time and earning as much as possible is the American Dream.

You don't need to work 24/7 at your job just to make as much money as possible, you need to have a life.
