Compromise of 1850

New lands in West renewed disputes over expansion of slavery

3. Texas could give up land east of the upper Rio Grande River. In turn, the federal governmet would pay Texas' debts.

4. Slave trade, but not slavery, would end in the nation's capital.

5. A more effective fugitive slave law would be passed.

Missouri Compromise of 1820 banned slavery north of latitude 36 30' N. Latitude.

Some leaders wanted popular sovereignty.

1. CA would enter Union as a Free state.

2. the rest of the Mexican Cession would be federal land.

  • The Wilmot Proviso prohibited slavery in the Mexican Cession. It was proposed but did not become law.
  • Sectionalism - favoring the interests of one region over another was increasing.
  • Anti-slavery party: Free-Soil party is formed in order to support the Wilmot Proviso.
