Visual Allegory

Crooks

symbolizes dreamer without hope

He was an outcast because of his race and wasn't allowed to hang out with any of the other men. In Chapter 5, when Lennie came into the room, he told Lennie how he wished he had someone to talk to. He's a dreamer without hope because he wants someone to talk to but has no one because of his skin color.

Candy

symbolizes social discrimination

Candy faced social discrimination because of his age and his handicap. He was kept on the ranch as long as he swamped the bunkhouse and because of his disability (his right hand) he couldn't do hard labor. He relates to his dog sort of because they were both old and faced the possibilty of being let go (even though the dog was killed.

Curley's Wife

symbolizes loneliness

Curley

Even though she was married, Curley's Wife was very lonely. She had no one to talk to since none of the men talked to her to avoid a beating from Curley. When she was in Crook's room she talked about how none of the mean talked to her and how Curley barely paid attention to her, he was always talking about beating someone up.

symbolizes insecurity

George

Symbolizes parenthood

Althoguh Curley, comes off as a bully, he's vey insecure. When George and Lennie first come into the ranch, Candy tells them about how he only fights big guys. Which is ironic considering, he's a small guy. He's also insecure about his wife. He doesn't allow her to talk to anyone on the ranch and isolates her from everybody.

George acted like a parent to Lennie. He loved Lennie yet was strict with him. He made sure Lennie was going on the right path and made sure to lecture him when he was doing the wrong thing. He has also been taking care of Lennie since his Aunt Clara died. Also, before the men came to the ranch, he made sure to give Lennie his do's and don't's.
