Christopher Columbus is the definition of a truly interesting person in America's history. There's large amounts of controversy because of what he did. But still, we will truly never forget that Colombus is "the man who discovered America."

What

  • He was the first european Explorer to colonize on the Americas.
  • In 1475 Columbus made his first considerable voyage to the Aegean island of Chios, and in 1476 he sailed on a Genoese ship through the Strait of Gibraltar.
  • Learned the names of Cathay (north China) and Cipango(Japan).
  • Sailed across the Atlantic and discovered smaller Islands.

Background

  • Born during late 1451 and died May 20, 1506
  • He was a master navigator and made four transatlantic voyages.
  • He was said to be the first one to reach the new world, which is his most famous voyage, but in reality, it was a viking named Lief Eriksson.

When/Where

  • Christopher Colombus set sail on August 3, 1492 from Palos, Spain and on October 11, 1492, spotted the Caribbean Islands of Southeastern North America.
  • He landed on what is now called Guanhani and named it San Salvador.
  • Lastly he traveled to the islands of Hispaniola, Cuba, and many smaller islands.

Why/How

  • He set out from Spain on August 3, 1492, to sail west to find a short cut to the East Indies in three ships.
  • Christopher Columbus traveled to find a shorter route to India.
  • He also wanted to find gold and gain power.
  • He set sail looking for riches to bring back to the King and Queen of Spain.
  • In 1485, Columbus presented his plans to king of Portugal, John II. He proposed that the king equip three sturdy ships and grant Columbus one year's time to sail out into the Atlantic.
  • He also did it to spread Christianity.

  • By making a promising to find a shorter way through the Atlantic Ocean.
