Rising Action Event #1

In chapter 14 Jonas insists that Gabriel stays in his room for the night. During the first part of the night Gabe sleeps soundly, but towards the middle of the night he starts to stir and wake up. Jonas picked up Gabe and put his hand on Gabe's back. Jonas thought of the memory of the sail boat on a lake. Then he realized that the memory began to become dimmer. Jonas did this once more at dawn, and perceived that he had the power to transfer memories.

In December, the ceremonies occur. This year Jonas attends the ceremony of twelve. As Jonas' fellow twelves are being assigned their jobs in order, Jonas patiently waits for his turn. To his left sits Fiona, to his right sits Pierre. After Jonas' turn to receive his assignment is skipped he feels he has done something wrong. After Pierre is given his assignment the Chief Elder explains why Jonas was skipped.She states that Jonas was not chosen, but selected to be the new receiver.

The main character in the story "The Giver" is Jonas. Jonas is a male protagonist who is about to become a twelve. During the ceremony of twelves Jonas is selected to become the new Receiver of Memory. During his training Jonas receives memories from The Giver.

In "The Giver" the setting takes place in a utopian community. In the beginning of the story it is close to December. In Jonas' society the citizens get no choices, because everything is the same, and no one can see in color or feel feelings.

Conflict

Rising Action Event #2

In "The Giver" the conflict for Jonas is receiving memories. In Jonas' training he receives new feelings he has never felt before. He feels pain, happiness, etc. Jonas receives all these memories for the community and he feels that everyone else should be able to feel the same thing as him.

During Jonas' first day of training with The Giver, he receives the memory of snow. The Giver places his hands on Jonas' back and transfers the memory. At first the Giver's hands didn't feel unusual at first, but then his hands felt suddenly cold. Soon the feeling of the hands on Jonas' back went away and he felt the sensation of cold air and snowflakes in the memory.

Climax

In chapter 18 and 19, the Giver and Jonas talk about release. That morning Jonas' dad was scheduled to release one of the two twins. By the time Jonas arrived at his training with the Giver, the occasion would already be over, but the Giver insisted that Jonas had to watch the release. The Giver and Jonas watched the release of the twin from the Hall of Closed Records. During the release Jonas' father weighs the newborns and hands the heavier one to a woman to clean him up and dress him. The lighter child is injected in the forehead with a needle filled with poison. By the end of the release Jonas felt a ripping sensation inside of him. That night Jonas didn't want to go back to his house so he spends the night with The Giver.

Resolution

Falling Action Event #1

During the night that Jonas spent the night with the Giver they made a plan to escape the community and release all the memories Jonas had received back to the citizens of the community. They plan that Jonas will leave at night, and head straight for elsewhere. The Giver transferred all the memories of courage and strength to Jonas for his journey.

Towards the end of Jonas and Gabe's journey they began to face frigid weather. As they continued their journey in the snow Jonas remembered that he could transfer memories to Gabe. Jonas then placed his hands on Gabe's back and transferred the memory of sunshine, but kept some of the memory for himself. After they experienced the heat for a little while, Jonas began to walk up the snowy hill. As Jonas and Gabe reaches the top of the hill Jonas began to feel happy. When he reached the top of the hill there was a sled. Jonas placed Gabe on his lap and they started down the hill. During their ride down the hill Jonas began to hear what he knew was music.

Falling Action Event #2

After Jonas and the Giver discuss their plan the night before, Jonas stealthily leaves the community the night after. When he reaches the opposite side of the river Jonas remembers that this community has been where his life had been lived. Then he realized that there was no time to waste looking back, so he continues pedaling on his dad's bike. Jonas took his father's bike because it had a baby seat, and had to take Gabe because he would have been released if Jonas hadn't taken him. During their journey to elsewhere Jonas and Gabe go to see animals such as deer, fish, and birds. As they got farther away from the community the landscape began to change.
