Various Crimes in America

Suicide

By: Anthony Santana and Cherie Burke

Rape

Suicide used to be considered a crime by the court, but was dismissed, once the court realized that suicide was caused mainly by mental disorders, such as clinical depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, postpartum depression, PTSD, or chemical imbalances in the brain.

Though suicide is not considered a crime, Assisted suicide, or, the act of helping someone commit suicide, is illegal in all United States, except for Oregon, which has had physician-assisted suicide laws since 1994 and implemented in 1998.

If a person attempts to commit suicide, then they can qualify for therapy and specialized medication.

For the past 85 years, the definition of Rape, created by the FBI, has remained unchanged, applying only to women, saying that Rape was the violation of a personal part of the body, against the will of the victim. Recently, has the FBI revised the definition, so it applies to both genders, stating that Rape is the violation of a personal part of the body, against the will of the victim. Part of the definition mentions how this applies to people who are mentally or physically incapable of making the decision

In America, there are three big crimes: Homicide, Suicide, and Rape.

Homicide comes from the Latin term, ‘Homicidum’, ‘Homo’ meaning ‘Human Being’, while ‘Caedere’ meaning ‘To cut or kill’, and Homicide is the act of one person killing another human being.

Murder is considered an act of Homicide. Sometimes Homicide is punishable by death, but it's much different than murder from a legal point of view. Murder is usually an intentioned

crime, and certain types of murder qualify for specific punishments.

However, if the murderer is labeled by the court as mentally unstable, then the murderer will

not receive severe charges. This is known as a 'Plead of Insanity'.

Here are some examples of Homicide, from the website http://homicidewatch.org/2012/03/21/murder-charge-against-aaron-adams-dismissed/

In June 2011, Aaron ‘Ace’ Adams (age 25) was arrested, and was suspected of committing a second-degree murder against Garrett Armand White, on May 29th, 2011, outside a nightclub on Georgia Avenue Northwest in Washington D.C.

By the time the police arrived, White was still alive, and though he was injured severely, he was still able to talk.

“Ace did this to me. He stabbed me.” White said, before the police officer asked what ‘Ace’ looked like.

“If I make it through this, I will tell you.” White replied.

He never did tell the police what ‘Ace’ looked like, because 6 hours later, at 9 P.M on May 29th, White died.

However, the second-degree murder charge against Adams has been dismissed, since the records don’t show Adams being involved in the case.

In 1990, Eric Renegar attempted to commit suicide, at the age of 18.

When he was 15, his dad died, and one year later, his mom remarried. His Christian father talked constantly about how much God loved Eric, but Eric didn’t want to hear it.

He missed his dad so much, that he turned to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain he felt, and on Thanksgiving on 1990, Eric decided to borrow a rifle from a friend, go over to the cemetery, and commit suicide on his father’s grave.

After drinking more alcohol, he took the gun and fired underneath his chin, only to realize he didn’t want to die, as he lay in a pool of his own blood.

By some miracle, he managed to get into his car and drive to the nearest hospital, where he was saved by various doctors and nurses. After this happened, he became a Christian.

In Van Buren County in Tennessee, 23 year-old male Brandon Brownell and his family were camping out in Fall Creek Falls Park, who, over a period of three days, gained the trust of the victim’s parents. Police said that he offered to take the child on a walk while accompanied with other children, however, Brownell admitted to raping the victim in the bathroom. His uncle told of the fact that Brownell has Asperger’s Disease, a unique form of autism, and that he had the IQ of a seven-year old, so he probably had no idea what he was doing. He’s been charged with rape of a minor, and if convicted will face a minimum of 25 years in prison, but would be free on a bond of $75,000.
