Tail Amputation

Time for Surgery

-22 gauge catheter was placed

-Pre-med with Simbadol (0.5ml) SQ

-Induced with Ketamine (0.2ml) and

Midazolam (0.2ml) IV

-3.5mm ETT and maintained with isoflurane

-Gave 40ml/hr of LRS (during surgery P became hypotensive and was changed to 80ml/hr

-Convenia (0.38ml) and Onsior (0.38ml) SQ as post-operation medication

-Clipped and scrubbed with chlorhexidine solution

Amputation

-Laser surgery (6W)

-Dorsal midline approach from the sacrum (caudally)

-Diverted ventrally at base of tail staying away from the anus

-Used the laser to excise ventral tail muscles

-4-0 Catgut was used for hemostasis of lateral tail veins

Closure:

-Used 3-0 PDS for SQ

-Used 3-0 Proplyglo for skin

Sally's Rush to the Clinic

-Owners made a call into clinic

-tail in the shape of a "J"

-Sally came in weighing 8.16 pounds

-Doctor decided to quickly take x-rays

-No blood work was performed (in this specific case it was not, but typically during amputations blood work is performed (McCurnin, 2014))

-No findings on PE besides tail luxated and patient uncomfortable with pelvis being touched

The Doctors' Plan for Sally

-Overnight Sally would get IV fluids and be re-evaluated in the AM

-She would be monitored for drainage

-Her pain level would be checked

-Additional Simbadol would be given if needed

-Onsior would be continued

-Sutures would be removed two weeks prior to surgery

-Next day after sx, Sally was rolling around acting like a normal cat and got discharged that day

Recovery

-Domestic Long Hair -2 year old feline

-Female Spayed -Front Paw De-Clawed

The Story of the Sally

**name of patient has been changed for confidentiality reasons**

-Sadly, Sally woke up fast and thrashing and 0.05 ml of Dexdomitor was given IM

-Post-op radiographs were taken and everything was perfect and the pelvic bones were not interrupted

-LRS was given at 12 ml/hr post-op

-Rx- Onsior 1 PO SID

Conclusion:

WEEEEEE!

Radiograph finding:

-completely luxated at sacrococcygeal joint

-fractured tail

-fractured pelvis

Doctors' recommendation:

-Amputate at sacrococcygeal joint

Owner consented
