We tend to disregard our individual rules, opinions, and ideas to conform to those accepted by society.

The Balance Between Insiders and Outsiders

Our society is made up of three groups...

  • The Conformers
  • The Non-conformers
  • The Balancers

The Nonconformists

People who choose to set their own standards in society.

Nonconformists don't mind that they are generally unaccepted

Sometimes....

there are enough nonconformists to break completely away from society, and form a new one.

Usually this behavior is influenced by some

between a person and the rest of society.

Nonconformists don't concern themselves with social norms.

The "Balancer"

The Balancers are those who are able to stay true to themselves and embrace their eccentricities , while still being accepted by society.

Leonardo da Vinci,

  • "Italian "Renaissance Man"

Extraordinarily talented --even his own mentor could "not fathom how a young boy understood them better than he did" (Vasari).

Multi- platinum,

pop singer

Grammy winning

TAYLOR SWIFT

released a new album dedicated embracing the individual

She has worked with many organizations and constantly supports being oneself regardless of the media's portrayal.

Growing Acceptance

But he was well-received and welcomed into the society of his time....how?

He was able to appeal to a wide range of people -- from peasants to Dukes

He was able to make useful and desired contributions to his society.

  • "Leonardo was so pleasing in his conversation that he won everyone's heart" (Vasari, 285).
  • When a local peasant requested him to paint a shield, da Vinci responded with a painting of a monster spitting fire which was so terrifying" that it highly praised and sold to the "Duke of Milan" (Vasari, 288)

people love watching others who are self-reliant and come off as independent and strong

  • Renaissance: "rebirth"; movement away from the religion-dominated Middle Ages (Vasari)
  • da Vinci's works represented the humanistic values promoted by the Renaissance
  • Although he and his abilities were neither understood nor shared by everyone in his society, his works moved society in the direction it wanted to go in.

Blank Space and Shake it Off are all about ignoring the rest of the world's standards and opinions and just being herself.

"embrace your individualism"

Our Favorite - Donald Trump

He may not be the typical idea of a "President" but he is still a leading candidate. Why ?

  • He uses simple and honest answers, an anti-elite political approach.
  • He says things that people are afraid to say. He does not conform to the ideal view of a politician so he is a fresh perspective and supported by many Americans.

How is that possible?

Critics may believe that If the concept of community implies a sense of unity, it is impossible for one to deviate from this unity and still be accepted?.

But when these "balanced" individuals are analyzed carefully, we can see that there is indeed an underlying method to the madness...

Ability to appeal to society--whether it is by talent, conversation, etc.

The "Balance"

Recap!!!

We have concluded that in the end, obviously nobody is perfect. The only people that will be accepted immediately are those considered "popular". What makes them popular will vary. For those that are a part of everybody else, being accepted for not conforming is much harder.

The "balance" does not have to confine itself to the Trumps, Swifts, and da Vincis of the world.

Cara Peterson, writer for the Duke University newspaper, The Chronicle, and a senior at Trinity College has spent her years in her campus community writing about its social dynamics.

Identity=

"the need to feel unique with one’s own sense of personal agency and value"

+

"the need to feel belonging, connectedness and unity within a community" (Peterson).

Everyday people (such as herself and you) can achieve the "balance" by reckognizing that one does not have to fall directly into the narrowly defined social construct...that it’s okay to adopt some parts and not others" (Peterson).
