"The Great Gatsby" Chapter 3 Questions

7. "Honest Nick"

Rebecca C. & Megan Y.

5. Guest vs. Gatsby

Nick believes himself to be honest because he is very frank and doesn't keep shadows around himself since he hasn't done anything to require secrets associated with his name. He can be seen as being honest based on what we know from the novel since no evidence has been given to say otherwise. There have been no instances where Nick has withheld information from the reader, or anyone else for that matter.

Gatsby is often very reserved and set apart compared to most of the guests that appear at his infamous parties. The guests tend to drink their fill and enjoy very close company with one another while Jay Gatsby, on the other hand, does not drink much of anything alcoholic and is typically not surrounded by many people. He remains very aloof and watches the crowds that are constantly attending the many extravagant parties.

3. Gatsby Rumors

1. Nick's Judgements

There are a few rumors that are discussed by some party goers, Jordan, and Nick. The first is that Gatsby killed a man, but that is shot down by it being said that Gatsby was a German spy during the war. Then another woman says that couldn't be possible because Gatsby was an American spy during the same war. These rumors were stated by Fitzgerald to add the mysterious effect of Mr. Gatsby. The stories being told leave the reader interested in who Gatsby really is and why so many people are fascinated by him.

Nick is very aware of the parties that go on at his neighbor's house, so therefore everything that happens in preparation for the parties is mentioned by Nick. This really shows how observant Nick can be, and though he doesn't live in Gatsby's world, he still is effected by what Gatsby does next door. Nick's attention to detail in this chapter especially set up how he notices the small things to come later throughout the novel.

6. Nick with Jordan Baker?

Nick chooses to share his thoughts with Jordan because he sees her as someone who won't go around and tell her knowledge to everyone else. He makes the comment that she is a liar and avoids shrewd men also, which is also something that Nick somewhat appreciates because she can keep herself out of trouble.

4. Nick's Afterthought

2. Gatsby at First Sight

When Nick first sees Gatsby, he doesn't give much description because Nick isn't aware that the man he is talking to is the mysterious Gatsby. All the description given at first is that he is just a man about the same age as Nick. Then once the introduction is made, Gatsby is said to look like "an elegant young roughneck, a year or two over thirty...". (page 48)

Nick is very curious after his first meeting with Gatsby and his only speculation is how this man "drift(s) coolly out of nowhere and buy(s) a palace on Long Island Sound". (page 49) This leaves Nick with a curiosity of Gatsby and which rumors are just rumors and what is the real truth.

And Then Jordan

Gatsby is Finally Introduced

When Jordan comes more into play during this chapter it is made clear that she is more of the carefree and "do what she wants" type to a certain extent. She does tend to lead when it comes to her and Nick, then she soon becomes a love interest for Nick after he comes to spend more time with her. So therefore she will be invaluable to certain aspects of the novel in moving it along.

More Nick

Though Gatsby had been mentioned several times by this point in the novel, the moment of truth when he is finally introduced occurs in this chapter. At first, Nick does not even realize that the man he is talking to is Gatsby, but then soon finds out that is the man who faintly recognized Nick from the war. Once this greeting occurs, the novel is then shifted to it's true purpose of a twisted love l so therefore without Gatsby there would truly be no novel to be read.

AND Characters

During this chapter it is shown how much Nick pays attention to details. This trait of Nick's becomes very important with the way he acts around people, and rather than engaging people on his own, he is more likely to follow someone else into a conversation.
