Gold Rush Continues...

"Gold Fever"-the '49ers come to Cali

  • 1855-1857: Gold Rush and gold fever begins to cool down. Gold production stabilized in 1857, at about $45 million dollars a year.
  • November 6, 1860-Abraham Lincoln elected as president.
  • April 12, 1861-American Civil War between northern states and southern states begins with the Confederates attacking Ft. Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina.

Mexican-American War:

  • May 13, 1846-The United States declares war on Mexico in an effort to gain California and other territory in the Southwest (land which included present day Utah, Nevada, most of New Mexico, Arizona, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming). War concludes with the signing of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (Feb. 2, 1848).
  • 1849-People rush in from all over the world (over 90,000) in search of gold. Gold mining towns spring up all over the region.
  • 1850-Compromise of 1850, California enters the union as a free state.

  • 1849-Discovery of Silver in Nevada ends the Gold Rush. The Gold Rush brought economic prosperity, and gave way to the nation's richest and most populous state, with its population reaching about 380, 000 people.
  • 1852- Foreign Mining Taxes imposed, geared toward Chinese miners. Gold Rush hits its peak with an estimated $81 million dollars pulled from the ground.
  • 1853- Edward Matteson invents the hydraulic mining technique and spreads throughout the mining camps.
  • January 24, 1848-James Marshall discovers flakes of gold near the American River while building a saw mill for John Sutter. (about a week later Mexico ceded California over to the U.S)
  • May 1848-Sam Brannan sparks interest when he runs about the small town of San Francisco with a bottle of gold he claimed he found at Sutter's Creek.
  • December 1848-President James Polk validated discovery of gold
