To Kill a Mockingbird Character Analysis: Jem Finch

Opinions!

Fatama: Jem is one of my favorite characters. I liked how he was reckless in the beginning of the story. He became a good, protective brother by the end.

Ali: I really liked Jem. I liked how he became sensitive. I feel like he was not the best brother in the start, but by the end, he was the best brother anyone could ask for.

Deajia: I liked Jem because we saw him change through the story. He became quieter.

The Attack

  • The Finch kids were attacked by Bob Ewell.
  • He felt very defensive and selfless. He was already very paranoid about being followed on the way home from the pageant.

The Trial

  • Jem tried to protect his sister.
  • Before the trial, Jem was confident that they were going to win the case.
  • His fears about not being able to play football were assuaged. He was not very self-conscious about his injury.

Opinions!

  • During the trial, Jem noticed that everyone was talking to Tom in a disrespectful way. That upset Jem because he didn't think it was right to talk to him that way just because he was black. He didn't agree with how he was being treated. He saw past his skin color; he saw the truth.

Hawraa: In my opinion, Jem Finch is one of my favorite characters, because in the beginning, Jem was quieter and more reserved than his sister, and had very high expectations for people. When these expectations were not met, Jem had a difficult time resolving his feelings. Within the small Southern town he lived in, Jem battled with racism. It was not until the end of the book when he had a better understanding of the world.

  • The verdict: Guilty
  • The trial affected Jem. He was affronted with the verdict.
  • Jem becomes upset when his little sister, Scout, brings up the trial. He asked her not to talk about it again.

Touching the Radley house

How Jem felt about it: At first, Jem was scared, but Scout tells us, "In all his life, Jem never declined a dare." She also says, "Jem had to think about it for 3 days. He loved honor more than his head."

How did Jem feel about the outcome? He was scared, but he was glad when Dill made a mild concession. "I won't say you ran out a dare an' I'll swap you The Gray Ghost if you just go up and touch the house."

How did Jem react to this event? Although Jem agreed to Dill's new mild concession, Scout tells us that Jem was still scared and explained it through his actions. " Jem threw open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran past us, not wanting to see if his fray was successful."

Who is Jem Finch?

Jem Finch is one of the most important characters. At the beginning of the story, he was fractious and contentious. By the end of the story, he was amiable.

Characteristics:

  • Impetuous
  • Sensitive
  • Defensive
