This era had many different movements and styles such as Romantic style, Neoclassicism, impressionism and many more. Music at the time had a large range of variety. Impressionism was one of the biggest movements. Some characteristics of this was that it had open chords and free rhythms and used modes and exotic scales. The music focused on conveying the moods and emotions of a subject in an atmospheric tone. Another movement was Neoclassicism which returned to the styles and forms of the Renaissance and Baroque era while adding some modern characteristics. Some popular music created during this era was jazz. Even though it originated from America many other countries adopted it.
This era of music was when the system of modes collapsed. The major and minor key system was also developed during this time. Unlike eras before, instrumental music became equal to vocal music. Some characteristics of Baroque music was that there was one mood throughout the music piece and it was mostly polyphonic. Many different forms such as binary were used and there were usually energetic rhythms, long melodies and contrasts between dynamics. Some new types of music, which became popular, were created such as operas, sonatas, and suites.
Romanticism is a term that described the changes in art and literature around the end of the 18th century. Musicians later used this word to describe the changes of style in music during that era. Many composers during that era were interested in art and literature so their music focused on themes other than love. Themes such as nature, fairy tales, dreams were new. These composers aimed to show all of their emotions and feelings through music. The music was more free and personal. The orchestra during this time also grew immensley because valves were invented for brass instruments, giving them more flexibility. Programme music, whcich tells a story through song, was also invented. During the mid 19th century Germany had dominated music. This caused other composers to want to break away from their style and create their own music using folk tunes and legends known to them. This was called nationalism and it was very popuar during that time
In this era the orchestra started to get bigger. Wind instruments began to become more important than strings and more instruments such as bassoons were added. Unlike baroque music, classical music was usually homophonic. The music also tried to focus on beauty and elegance and there was even more contrast with dynamics pitch and tempo than the Baroque era. The melodies were also shorter than Baroque era music. Instrumental music such as sonatas, symphonies, and trios became important and popular.
The name means rebirth. This era was a like rebirth of how music was created. Unlike Medieval times the music was very blended and was weaved together with imitation. The music was still based on modes but more composers were using accidentals. The music felt blended and the idea of harmony was becoming more aware. Some popular forms of music for this era were Church and Secular music.
