The Chivalric Code

Conclusion

The Code of Chivalry was a code kept by knights of the dark middle ages. Christianity and Medieval Romance Literature had a large effect on it. The code emphasized bravery, courtesy, honor, and service to God.

  • The word chivalry comes from the french word chevalier.
  • It was a code of honor that developed for armed knights on horseback.

Acts of Chivalry

  • Chivalry was created during the 11th and 12th centuries when Europe's political system was feudalism.
  • Men of chivalry fought for war against non-christians
  • Chivalry is the "Religious, moral, and social

code that covered every aspect of their lives"

  • One popular way of fighting was jousting. Jousting is when two opponents fight on horseback. They won points by unhorsing opponents or breaking their lances, and the procedure had many rules and regulations of chivalry.

  • There are two main things that had the biggest effect on chivalry.
  • The first is Medieval romance literature, which involved stories of courtly love.
  • The second was Christianity, which imposed limits on battles and called the knight to protect the weak, preserve the peace, and respect the church.
  • To fear God and maintain his church.
  • To protect the weak and defenseless.
  • To live by honor and for glory.
  • To obey those placed in authority.
  • To at all times speak the truth.
  • To never refuse a challenge from an equal.
  • To never turn the back upon a foe.
